If you get a traffic citation in Jefferson County, you have several options:

  • Appear in court (with OR without an attorney) to contest the charges
  • Apply for Drive Safe Louisville (see information below)

Drive Safe Louisville

Drive Safe Louisville is a traffic safety program run by the Jefferson County Attorney’s Office and is the only option completed without going to court and without a guilty plea or conviction. Please read about your options to help you decide how to handle your citation. Complete the program and you will have no points against your license and no conviction of a traffic ticket on your driving record.

Most moving violations are considered for the program; however, the Jefferson County Attorney reserves the right to exclude applicants based on the seriousness of the violation, criminal history, and/or the number of past violations. Participants pay an administrative fee of $179 after being approved and no other fees or costs are assessed. As explained on the back of your citation, prepaying your fine and court costs is equivalent to pleading guilty, and it is not part of the process for Drive Safe Louisville.

Kentucky State Traffic School

The primary purpose of State Traffic School is to promote safe and responsible driving. The goal of State Traffic School is to provide an educational program that renews a driver’s outlook regarding traffic safety and to instill a positive attitude toward highway and traffic safety by encouraging an understanding and recognition of personal driving behaviors, which will result in a reduced number of deaths and injuries related to vehicular crashes and moving hazardous violations. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s Division of Driver Licensing offers two approved options for completing the program: Online and in-person (classroom instruction). With either option, you must still pay the $134 court costs plus the course fee.
